Motor Vehicle Accidents

Helping You After Your Accident

If you have been injured in an automobile accident in Alberta, you are entitled to accident benefits coverage regardless of whether you were at fault for the accident. The benefits you receive depend on the type of injury you have.

Your auto insurance covers you for a minimum of 10 chiropractic treatments for minor injuries under the Alberta diagnostic treatment protocols regulation.

Chiropractic treatment for minor injuries is billed directly to your insurance company. You do not have to submit receipts for reimbursement. Make sure you tell your chiropractor that you were injured in a car accident so they will fill out the forms to have your treatment costs covered.

Through a different automobile insurance program, every Albertan is entitled to $750 of chiropractic care coverage for motor vehicle accident injuries under Section B.

How Do I Receive Treatment?

Within 10 days of the collision:

  1. File an injury accident report with the police.

  2. Make an appointment with our office, NO referral is necessary. If your injury is considered minor (i.e. sprain, strain or minor whiplash injury), you do not need authorization from your insurer. You may begin treatment immediately and your insurance company will be billed directly.

  3. File the appropriate forms with your insurer. Besides your insurer or insurance broker, we also have the forms you need.  Just click the link below to go to our download forms page.  https://www.kinetichealth.ca/downloads

  4. If you have any questions, please contact your auto insurance company and ask about your MVA health care coverage under Section B.

Resolving Whiplash Injuries Part 1 - Biomechanics

- Dr. Brian Abelson DC.

Whiplash injuries or a Whiplash Associated Disorder (WAD) is a common group of conditions that often results from a Motor Vehicle Crash (MVC). In Part One of Resolving Whiplash Injuries we reviewed the effects of Stage 1: Vehicle Impact & Stage 2: Neck Hyper-Extension in a whiplash injury (WAD). We also take a look at some of the anatomical structures that are typically involved in these injuries.

Resolving Whiplash Injuries Part 2 - Biomechanics

- Dr. Brian Abelson DC.

In Part 2, we focus on Stage 3 – Neck Hyper-Flexion. During Stage 3, almost instantaneously, both the torso and head are flung forward. This forward motion is so strong that if the passenger’s do not have their seat-belt on, they could, depending on force of impact, be thrown right out of their seat into the steering wheel or even be thrown through the window.

Whiplash Injuries Part 3 - Symptoms & Examination

- Dr. Brian Abelson DC.

The symptoms of a whiplash injury are varied, and potentially cover large regions of the body. Many of these symptoms do not come on immediately, often taking weeks to develop after the initial accident. It is imperative to perform a thorough physical examination after any motor vehicle injury. Delaying this could have significant consequences, both for resolving the injury.

Whiplash Injuries Part 4 - Treatment of WAD Injuries

- Dr. Brian Abelson DC.

Manual therapy should begin as soon as possible, after a complete physical examination (orthopedic and neurological testing) and appropriate imaging has been taken to rule out fractures. Research consistently shows that manual therapy is effective for decreasing pain and improving function.

Whiplash Injuries Part 5 - Exercises & Treatment

- Dr. Brian Abelson DC.

Exercise is a critical component in rehabilitating WAD injuries. There is strong evidence that shows that exercise combined with manual therapy (manipulation or mobilization) has a substantial effect on reducing pain and increasing range of motion after a WAD.
